A common question that is often heard regarding the project is: How can the Beetaloo Basin fracking contribute to climate change or changes in the environment? The Beetaloo Basin fracking does not have any negative impact on the environment. The Beetaloo Basin fracking project is carried out carefully in order to make sure that it is being done sustainably. That means less emissions, minimum water usage, and protecting the land and water. The NT Government’s Department of Environment has approved of plans for the Beetaloo Basin exploration. Environmental management plans include details of any environmental impacts and any risks associated with the project. Fracking has no effect on surrounding groundwater, nor does it have any effect on humans or animals in the area. The groundwater is protected from the drilling through the well’s multiple layers of steel and cement. The chemicals used in fracking are diluted, so there are no major risks concerning the land or water in the area. The water used in fracking is recycled and reused in the project as part of efforts to keep water usage at a minimum. Although water makes most of the mix, we operate under a regulated water allocation plan to manage our water use. Because the Beetaloo Basin fracking is done responsibly, it will reduce our carbon footprint and therefore, have no major impact on the environment.
